I think that we are all voyeurs. We stalk the rich and famous. It’s like that Lost Boyz song Lifestyles of the rich and Shameless. Cuz honestly dear reader that’s what they are. Cocaine is a rampant problem in Hollywood. It’s how actresses stay thin. I remember my friend Eric telling me that’s how all famous women stay thin. I mean honestly how can you stay that thin without it. A friend of mine got a job working at a ski resort and she got painfully thin. I mean it was so bad I asked her if she needed a cheeseburger, cuz the bitch looked hungry. She blamed it on the high altitude. Um…you think I’m buying that shit? High altitude my ass. However I find it interesting that high altitude gives you nose bleeds and that’s what cocaine does when you use it too much. I always wonder how these women, who are constantly shoved down my throat do it. Do they even fucking eat? My hypothesis is no. Because when this friend of mine was at the Hollywood standard she was so sick. Both inside and out. This idea that we need to see a prominent collar bone in order to be sexually seductive is gross. Why should my collar bone be jutting out like a sharp knife? Men find this annoying. I just thought I’d let you know. Maybe it’s a nature vs. nature type of thing. I talk to my cat Ben because he’s a Siamese cat and they meow a lot. So I do it back to him. I mimic him. He eats it up. He loves it. I can tell because he becomes affectionate. The moment I stopped talking to him he became really skinny. His bones jutting out. At first I thought I should take him to the vet, but when you’re poor the vet is not an option. It’s not affordable. The rates are sky high and of course people will pay anything because they love their pets. It’s kind of a scam actually. Like health care. But I’ll get into that later. Back to Ben. I figured out that it was because I stopped talking to him. He hid in my basement and would rarely come out. This went on for maybe about a month. When he finally emerged his healthy body was depreciated. I love my cat and I wouldn’t do anything to fuck him up. At my mother’s suggestion and against my better judgment I started feeding him wet food. I never do that, I think it’s bad for cats. The wet food only gave him diarrhea. Like when woman abuse laxatives. I mean he got it bad. And I just wanted the poor guy to gain weight so he wouldn’t die. The more I fed him wet food to “fill him up” the more he shit all over me. Finally things went back to normal between us. I started talking to him, mimicking him and he gained weight. He just wanted me to talk to him. He wanted to hear my voice. He literally almost starved to death because I stopped being myself. I stopped being affectionate and loving and patient and kind. I ignored him because I didn’t know how to deal with myself. I think when woman are in relationships with men and they are not themselves men notice this right away. They pull away. They become distant and detached. And we starve ourselves because we think it’s what they need. We think they want the standard. The Giselle. But even Giselle is not Giselle. She’s a marketing tool to sell shit. How do think that makes her feel? On the real. To be told over and over you just have a pretty face is fucking insulting. Uh, hello I have a personality too. Duh mutherfuckers. She does great work for disadvantage youth and her flip-flop company sells cheap footwear to the poor in her native land. I mean when you’re from Brazil you gotta give back. What my friend Mary wisely pointed out is that men are not stupid. They know it’s all a ploy to sell shit. To make you consume at faster and faster rates. Rape and pillage the earth is these assholes models. And the sad part they are so oblivious that they don’t even know that they are doing it. Or maybe they do. I mean the rainforest in Brazil is on the most beautiful natural wonders in the world. And they are destroying it. Haven’t you seen that animated film Fern Gully Last Rainforest? That is the movie that taught me to be an environmentalist. Or rather called me to action. As women we literally rape ourselves to be this ideal that doesn’t exist. We starve ourselves, morphing ourselves into hideous villains with plastic surgery, and stick needles in our faces (seriously we all hate needles) to maintain youth.. Because we think that is what men want. First of all we need to stop thinking so fucking much and just ask. Seriously. Ask your man what he needs. Not wants. What happened to the natural aging process? Older women are beautiful but because they have wisdom. This bullshit that Anna Wintour shoves down our throats over at the Vogue offices is such bullshit. They barely but black models on the fucking covers and when they do it’s someone that is not fully black. How fucked up is that. What I won’t give to see an actual African model on the cover. Now that is a Vogue I will read. I haven’t read a Vogue in months. The last one I read was the one with Giselle was on the cover and she’s mixed. Just like me. I don’t give a fuck what’s she’s mixed with. That is so not the point. Like Immortal Technique says in the song “Hollywood Drive-by” : Anorexic celebrity driven financial fantasy fiction. They shove this culture down our throats and these people barely even maintain. How fucked up is that. We look up to people who don’t even know how to keep it real. The do mass amounts of blow to keep this standards. Think about it they do drugs. They are fucking addicts. Slaves..That is exactly what they are. Slaves to an invisible machine. Like rats on wheel. They keep spinning and spinning (cuz of the coke) and they go nowhere. Like their careers. I’m not naming names, but I have an excellent source. I don’t know maybe it’s like that book I read: Maybe the Devil Does Wear Prada. Until next time. Peace.

It was like November 2009 and I was rolling Beacon Ave with my friend Saman, an Iranian girl who’d grown up between the US / Kenya / England. We were in the Nissan Sentra she’d bought from a mutual friend who’d previously bought it from me, and I had bought it from another Iranian dood in Whitecenter who makes some of the best homemade Joojeh Kabob you’ve ever tasted.

She was playing this record from a band called The xx she recently was referred to by a friend or something off the iPod plugged into the tape-deck thru an adapter while powered by one of those cigarette lighter things from Radio Shack.

Yea that’s right, it’s a cigarette lighter. Funny how new cars don’t have “cigarette lighters” and instead have a circular hole thing for “power supply” that you still need to buy a special adapter for. Originally, plugging your walkman, discman, and later cellphone via adapter into these lighter plugs was an innovative way of drawing power from what was available to you as a car owner.

Now smoking cigarettes is suddenly super taboo and new cars don’t have cigarette lighters built in to them, but they still have this power-hole.

My question was, if you’re gonna make a car with a power-hole, why not just make it a REGULAR OUTLET? If you’re no longer supplying the cigarette lighter, there’s no point in keeping the whole power-hole thing in it’s original form.

Well, more and more new consumer cars have regular outlets now and that makes this whole argument a little moot.

The point is, the speakers in this Nissan Sentra weren’t very good and made the the music that’s being played out of them sound all gray. For this particular record tho, that didn’t matter. Every song on this xx record was already gray (pardon me, “grey”), they all sounded the same, and they were all awesome. Perfect for a November drive in the Town.

As we listened to this record, I turned to Saman and said “you know, one of the first things Blue Scholars became known for was flipping indie-rock samples in rap songs. It fits in with our whole eclectic, international-Seattle identity. Also, the only thing that would make us even more compatible with The xx is if the only South Asian in the group, Baria Qureshi, didn’t quit the band.”

She looked back at me and said “will you please stop talking about work for 5 seconds? I DON’T CARE. Geez.”

Seattle native David Lee A.K.A. Cin’atra Da Mob$ta is doing big things. Straight from Holly Park, Cin’atra grew up in one of Seattle’s roughest neighborhoods and has emerged as a “Reality Rapper”, a term he coined to describe his personal reality. He has been featured on fifteen underground recordings since 1999 and founded his own independent record label Deep Groove Entertainment. I recently sat down with Cin’atra and we discussed Reality Rap, Holly Park and how he got his name.

Thread da Needle: When did you first fall in love with Hip Hop?

Cin’atra: I fell in love with Hip Hop when I was a very young child. I was introduced to rap when I first heard “Rapper’s Delight” by the Sugar Hill Gang and “The Message” by GrandMaster Flash & The Furious 5. I use to always watch movies like “Beat Street”, “Rappin’” and “Breakin’”.

Thread da Needle: When did you first become Cin’atra Da Mob$ta? Is he your alter ego? Is your rap name Cin’atra and ode to Frank Sinatra?

Cin’atra: I went by a lot of rap names when I first started out. I picked Cin’atra as an ode to Frank Sinatra. The name is a symbol of respect, accomplishment and it demands respect. I chose the name for myself as a goal of what I am trying to achieve in the music business. The name Cin’atra fits me well and most people see me as Cin’atra.
Da Mob$ta was added more recently by one of my O.G. partners name Big Charge. He a real O.G. from the Southend and he commands respect. So it is a real honor to receive that title from a real gangsta from the streets. Much love and respect to my folks, Big Charge!.

Thread da Needle: In your album, “Rhymez Emphasizing Actual Life”, you address social problems that plague Seattle, but are not well-known. Growing up in the Central District, how did this affect you?

Cin’atra: I was born poor, single parent home, food stamps, housing projects and Salvation Army; the whole nine yards. I lived in the Old School Holly Park. That was one of the roughest neighborhoods back in the day. I lived in Seattle pretty much all my life. So I lived in almost every hood in Seattle. My family was homeless for a while, so we lived with friends and associates. I grew up as a ward of the state, foster care, group homes and I was also homeless. This album is my real life story. It’s millions of people’s life story.

Thread da Needle: Do you escape through your music?

Cin’atra: I escape, entertain and educate through my music. Hip Hop is my passion and my real first love.

Thread da Needle: The Hip Hop Scene in Seattle is starting to get more prevalent. What do you think about this?

Cin’atra: We do have some real talented artists that have broken through regionally, but I have yet to see a local artist really get that national exposure. I love to hear success stories about our local artists. We have some real talent here in the Northwest. We have producers that have went major, but our emcees have not gotten that real taste like Sir-Mix-A lot did.

Thread da Needle: Would you describe yourself as a gangsta rapper?

Cin’atra: No, I consider myself a reality rapper. And there’s a difference. I describe Gangsta Rap as fictional stories of gangbanging, drug selling and murder. Now reality rap is more personal, it appeals to your soul. Reality Rap is emotional music, whether it deals with personal struggle, relationships, etc. Reality Rap is something that a lot of people can relate to. It evokes emotion in the music.

Thread da Needle: Who are your influences?

Cin’atra: Ya know! I am an ol’school soul. I am influenced by the greats like Grand Master Flash & The Furious 5, Run-DMC, UTFO, Fat Boys, Slick Rick ^ Dougie Fresh, L.L. Cool J, Ice-T, NWA, The Geto Boys, Just Ice, Kool G. Rap, 2Pac and Eric B. & Rakim. These are the artists who have inspired me.

Thread da Needle: Who produced Rhymes Emphazing Actual Life?

Cin’atra: I reached out to a lot of local talent. I worked with local Platinum producer FunkDaddy, a few upcoming producers like Pain, Apoulo, Red Head Steve and my friend from Norway named Big Ice.

Thread da Needle: Will you be working with FunkDaddy on your next effort?

Cin’atra: Actually me and FunkDaddy are wrapping up my new album right now. FunkDaddy produced a majority of the album and my friend from the Caribbean Islands named Detress produced four tracks for the new album as well.

Thread da Needle: You recently opened up for E-40. What was that like for you?

Cin’atra: It was an amazing honor! I am a big fan of his and it was a huge moment for me. Besides that, it was a real good turnout and I received a good response for my music and my performance.

Thread da Needle: Do you have plans to tour?

Cin’atra: Most definitely! That is actually an immediate goal that I am trying to accomplish right now. I would really love to tour, so I am working on that right now.

Thread da Needle: When is your next show?

Cin’atra: I am performing this upcoming Friday, 8/27/10, at Club Broadway in Everett, Washington. I will be opening up for Hip Hop Icons Naughty By Nature. The artists on the bill are The Throwbackx, Cin’atra Da MoB$ta, Nkruma and Mr. Ock and of course Naughty By Nature.

Seattle native Cin’atra Da Mob$ta has a new record out entitled Rhymez Emphasizing Actual Life. I met this cat about a month ago and he so graciously gave me a copy of this CD. It’s what West Coast Gangsta Rap is all about. Tight beats and dope rhymes. I was impressed. He style is laid back and conscious. Not a lot of people put together gangsta and conscious, but Ice Cube did it and he did it well. Cin’atra is no exception. Gritty and dirty Cin’atra raps about the streets and keeps it real in doing so. He exposes a side of Seattle that is largely ignored and spits in the face of the so-called liberals who infest our city but largely ignore social problems that are knocking at our back doors. All in all an impressive debut. Be on the look out for my interview. Peace.

I got an e-mail from Geo today, describing the Blue Scholar’s new song Summertime in the SEA, which is really good. I’ve posted the e-mail below along with a link to download the new song. Enjoy!

Dove Shack’s “;Summertime in the LBC” is anthemic seasonal perfection. If it hasn’t found its way onto your summer playlist, then you’re losing and you don’t even know it. Bumping that track has become a yearly tradition for us rap-loving Northwestcoasters who only see glimpses of So-Cal like weather for just a few weeks out of the year. For me, its become synonymous with backyard BBQs, rolling to Alki, and mobbing deep to festivals like Bon Odori and Pista Sa Nayon.

Ah, yes, Pista. The one day out of the year besides a Journey concert where you can see ten thousand Filipinos in the town at once. Where we learned the art of ducking aunties and uncles to burn trees in the darkest parts of Seward Park. Where I learned to never go after Khingz in a freestyle cipher. The kind of summer days that almost make the other seasons worth it.

Last year, I attempted to do a mixtape/freeverse type song using the “Summertime in the LBC” instrumental. Miserable fail. Soon as I turned the mic on, I’d hear the original vocals over and over in my head. So I just started singing that instead, changing some of the lyrics along the way. Then I sent it to a few friends and forgot all about it. A year passed, and The Sun started making cameos again in our gray little city, along with requests to put out a mixed-down version of the song.

So here it is. Our tribute to summer in Seattle, and an homage to what I believe to be the finest summertime song of my generation. From my birthplace (LBC) to my nowplace (Seattle), to anywhere people of the sun gather to celebrate its presence.

Where are you from?

Earth. I think…Haha. I’m originally from Connecticut.

When did you first fall in love with Hip-Hop?

The moment I saw it and heard it. I was probably 5-6 when I started really becoming aware of what was going on around me. I was actually exposed to grafitti and break dancing before I was exposed to any one particular rap artist. I didn’t know who the rappers were, I just knew I liked the way the breaks and beats sounded combined with the dance movements and the two-dimensional visuals on the walls in and around my neighborhood. When I finally listened and heard The Message by Melly Mel and Grandmaster Flash, I was hooked. The more I listened to the words the more captivated I became. I started listening to The Treacherous Three and hand me down tapes with the Cold Crush Brothers on them and soon after started my own little record collection, scooping up everything that came out from Kurtis Blow to the Fat Boys, Run DMC and more.

Who are your influences?

Everyone. I’m influenced by everything I see in the world around me. I’m a huge fan of music and art and I can go on and on about my love for others but I know we don’t have the time for that. A short quick answer- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, Ghandi, Krs One, Chuck D, Kool Moe Dee, Run Dmc, Brother Ali, Slug, Norman Rockwell, Jack Kirby, Stan Lee, Al Williamson, John Romita Jr., Harvey Kurtzman, Richard Pryor, Bugs Bunny, Carlos Pacheco, Frank Frazetta, John Walsh…and so many others. Like I said I can go on and on.

When did you discover you had a talent for rapping?

I’ve been writing stories and poetry since I was very little. Eventually my love for writing and my love for HipHop led me to combine the two and try my hand at writing rhymes of my own, mimicking my favorite artists like Kool Moe Dee, Run DMC and KRS. I’d say I was around the age of 12-13 when I started composing actual songs and feeling confident enough to rock them in front of others. Many years ago. Haha.

Does being white affect how people perceive you as an MC?

I am sure it affects some people but I am not really aware of it because I do not allow myself to focus on that. That would be a better question for the fans or “haters” I guess. I roll with artists like Public Enemy, and they don’t have any problem with me being white as far as I know, and that is all that matters to me. Lol. I’d like to think people judge me based on my skills and what I bring to the table and not on my skin color.

Do you think that reverse discrimination still exists in Hip-Hop?

There will always be people who dislike you for one reason or another. Whether it’s color, gender, religion, regional drama or language. But HIPHOP is international and universal now so there is an audience for everyone. I’ve gotten love from all kinds of people across the spectrum so I don’t pay attention to anyone that may not like me for whatever reason.

How did you get involved with Public Enemy and come up with a comic book idea?

I was a huge P.E. fan growing up and I always felt like they were real life super heroes and the perfect band to be turned into comic book characters. I worked at Marvel for a brief period and they had a music division and had been working on a P.E. comic themselves. The music department eventually collapsed and the project was scrapped. But I always thought if I had my chance I could do it right.

Years later I met Chuck through his website and he licensed some of my songs for his record label Slam Jamz Records. I was working with a crew called the Impossebulls and we went on tour with Chuck and P.E., opening for them, Blackalicious and Dilated Peoples. Chuck and I got to talking more, he knew I was an independent comic book publisher and illustrator, and I told him about my ideas and he loved them and we went to work. With the help of Professor Griff and S1W James Bomb we put the series together and made it happen.

Who are you listening to right now?

At this very moment I am listening to my man Bumpy Knuckles spin a dope mix on his internet video show-Krupt Mob Radio- http://www.ustream.tv/channel/krupt-mob-radio Bumpy is an incredible deejay and is rocking a diverse collection of HipHop and R&B.

As for records I am rocking…I still have the last Q Tip record- The Renaissance, in rotation, I love that record. I’m a big fan of up-and-coming artist GodAWFUL. He has a new album called Beats & Rhymes in The Key of AWFUL Vol. 1 and it’s really dope. Check him at- http://godawful.bandcamp.com/. I’m loving the new Rakaa album. I love HipHop and I am a huge music fan so I listen to a lot of artists from the classics to new artists. Krs One, De La Soul, Brother Ali, Gift of Gab, Eternia, Louis Logic, Masta Ace and EMC, Ludacris, Blu, Atmosphere, Toki Wright, Grouch, Beatmonstas, Mos Def…just a few of the people in rotation.

Will you be working with other artists in upcoming projects?

Definitely. Since Feel Good Music was virtually guest free I am really looking forward to collaborating with friends and peers to create something different. I love true creative collaborations where artists build and vibe off of each other, so I am hoping to get into the studio with some friends and make some great music. I usually don’t like to reveal who or what until it happens because sometimes things fall through though. I can reveal that I’m currently working on a song with my man, Freddie Foxxx, aka Bumpy Knuckles and it’s going to be a monster.

Will you be working with J.J. Brown again?

I have three new songs I am working on with J.J. I would love to do a follow up to Feel Good Music but he’s an incredibly busy person and we’ll just have to see how it goes. The new songs sound amazing though- J.J. is such a great producer and he really challenges me to bring my best when we work together.

Future projects?

I am working on several new graphic novels that I hope to announce soon. I am also working on a few new album collaborations with various producers. I have a TV show I am developing. Throw in some random freelance projects for other artists and companies and I am staying pretty busy. Definitely stay tuned to my blob at www.adamwallenta.com for weekly updates.

When is the best time of the day for working on comics?

It depends on my creative cycle. I usually like to get right to work first thing in the morning when the sun is just coming up, but there are also times when I’m most creative late at night when everyone else has fallen asleep. Some days are 24/7 creativity and then there are those days when I need to get outside of the studio and be out doors soaking in some sunshine.

I’ve been asking myself a question and that is will some of the greatest MC’s of our time, and those people are yet to be determined, will be remembered not as rappers but as poets? I’m talking in the same ball park as Keats and Hughes. Mainstream America’s idea of poet is not a street wise black man who rises up out of poverty to live the dream of the MC.

For me the only rapper that fits into this category is Tupac. We all know that Pac was an ill lyricist, but he penned some beautiful rap lyrics a.k.a. poetry during his career. I attended a seminar on Hip-Hop at a Foster Care Adoption conference and Pac’s lyrics were used as an example of how foster children relate to him because he captures their mood by speaking on their pain. An example of his work is below.

“Brenda’s Got A Baby”

Brenda’s got a Baby
Brenda’s got a Baby

I hear Brenda’s got a baby
But, Brenda’s barely got a brain
A damn shame
The girl can hardly spell her name
(That’s not our problem, that’s up to Brenda’s family)
Well let me show ya how it affects the whole community
Now Brenda really never knew her moms and her dad was a
junky
Went in death to his arms, it’s sad
Cause I bet Brenda doesn’t even know
Just cause your in the ghetto doesn’t mean ya can’t grow
But oh, that’s a thought, my own revelation
Do whatever it takes to resist the temptation
Brenda got herself a boyfriend
Her boyfriend was her cousin, now lets watch the joy end
She tried to hide her pregnancy, from her family
Who didn’t really care to see, or give a damn if she
Went out and had a church of kids
As long as when the check came they got first dibs
Now Brenda’s belly is gettin bigger
But no one seems to notice any change in her figure
She’s 12 years old and she’s having a baby
In love with the molester, who’s sexing her crazy
And yet she thinks that he’ll be with her forever
And dreams of a world with the two of them are together,
whatever
He left her and she had the baby solo, she had it on the
bathroom floor
And didn’t know so, she didn’t know, what to throw away and
what to keep
She wrapped the baby up and threw him in the trash heep
I guess she thought she’d get away
Wouldn’t hear the cries
She didn’t realize
How much the the little baby had her eyes
Now the baby’s in the trash heep balling
Momma can’t help her, but it hurts to hear her calling
Brenda wants to run away
Momma say, you makin’ me lose pay, the social workers here
everyday
Now Brenda’s gotta make her own way
Can’t go to her family, they won’t let her stay
No money no babysitter, she couldn’t keep a job
She tried to sell crack, but end up getting robbed
So now what’s next, there ain’t nothing left to sell
So she sees sex as a way of leaving hell
It’s paying the rent, so she really can’t complain
Prostitute, found slain, and Brenda’s her name, she’s got a baby

Baby

(don’t you know she’s got a baby)
(don’t you know she’s got a baby)
(don’t you know she’s got a baby)
(don’t you know she’s got a baby)
(don’t you know she’s got a baby)
(don’t you know she’s got a baby)

Summer time and the livings easy…..Hip-Hop has been for me a driving force in my life. It’s the way I live. I wonder sometimes is it healthy to listen to all this Hip-Hop? And why haven’t I turned into some dumb ignorant nigga? I am a nigga, but according to stereotypes and conventions of modern day society I should be corrupt because I like a little Gang Starr with my coffee. This summer is no except to my vast consumption of new music and oldies. Can you believe I said oldies? Hip-Hop has survived long enough to amass a catalog of some funky shit and my collection is well adept with some of these records.

Distant Relatives by NaS and Damian Marley is by far the gem. Never in my life could I imagine the fusion of Hip-Hop and Reggae. It’s so seamless, like it was meant to be. The whole album is flawless. NaS and Damian compliment each other’s musical abilities with ease and it somehow all flows together when you expect it to fall flat on its ass.
